ASAU is a Melbourne / Paris-based clothing project founded by Gabriel Cole as an artisanal and subcultural response to contemporary clothing and tailoring. Originally developed through Cole’s multidisciplinary art and design practice, the brand combines deconstructed garment construction, experimental pattern making, and handcrafted processes with influences drawn from underground culture, lived experience, and personal narrative.

Now evolving as a collaboration between Cole and tailor Joel Bernoth, ASAU explores the relationship between structure and disruption — merging traditional tailoring techniques with distressed treatments, reconstructed silhouettes, and tactile surface interventions. Central to the brand is an ongoing exploration of genderless dressing, developing garments that move fluidly across identity and body.

Driven by a strong sense of connection to people, place, and feeling, the work responds to both intimate and collective experiences. Through reimagined silhouettes and material experimentation, ASAU creates clothing intended to feel personal, instinctive, and lived-in — pieces that challenge convention.

ASAU CORE LINE A foundational line focused on everyday garments, refined through material treatment, silhouette, and subtle constructional interventions.

ASAU 6DS (Six Degrees of Separation)
The artisanal line — consisting of one-off and hand-finished garments individually developed through processes of reconstruction, distressing, dyeing, tailoring, and surface experimentation, making each piece unique to its wear

ASAU respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land, the Bunurong Boon Wurrung and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin Nation and pays respect to their Elders past, present and emerging.
